Montblanc M Fineliner Review:
The Mont Blanc Fineliner is kind of unique, in that it is more of a sketching marker than an actual pen. It is slightly larger than a marker, but definitely shorter than a fountain pen. The body is made out of a kind of shiny black material that feels almost like resin, but not as sticky or tacky. The cap is a shiny metallic gold, and the clip is plated in platinum. The cap has an unusual slanted grip, which you can see clearly in my pictures. It is not uncomfortable or anything, but it is something that I would have to get used to. It is lightweight, but it does not feel cheap, as some lightweight pens tend to do.
The ballpoint end works well, the ink flows well, and the grip is comfortable. The clip has a nice strong magnetic functionality, which I have really been enjoying using. This is a wonderful pen for sketching, or simply doodling while you are out and about. The ink flows well, is never scratchy, and the click ends don’t smear the ink. The platinum plated clip can feel a bit awkward at times, as it is slightly off center, but it does not affect the usability of the pen. I would say, though, that this is a pen that is really made for doodling or quick sketches. If you have an exam coming up, or you want to write an essay with this pen, you may run into some problems. This pen is very short, and I could see it running out of ink rather quickly under those conditions.
If you are looking for a pen with a nice, pleasant flow to write with, and don’t plan on doing a lot of writing with extensive handwriting, this is a pen would be great. Make sure that you don’t allow the ink to sit for too long, as it is designed with sketching in mind, and a little ink may dry up inside it, which you may not notice at first. This pen glides very smoothly over the paper, and it is a refreshing way to go from my regular pens. However, I would not recommend this pen for writing a short story or essay. I use gel ink pens a lot, and I had no issues using this pen.
If you are looking for a good pen for sketching, however, this is a great choice. I have had a lot of fun using it in my classes, and I would say that it is one of the better pens that I own to both write and sketch with. It will take a while to get used to, as it is not a typical pen design. Once you get used to it though, I can guarantee that you will enjoy it as well.
In closing, I would give this pen a 4 out of 5 stars, mainly because it is not a pen that will work well for long writing sessions, and it is larger than your typical wallet pen. Although it does not work well for long writing sessions, it is perfect for doodling or sketching, due to its great build quality and comfort at hand. You will find yourself coming back to this pen over and over again for quick sketches.
